Some companies in China are illegally using discarded oil scooped from sewage or organic waste from restaurants to recycle into cooking oil and selling to consumers.
When thinking about the cooking oil used in restaurants, already one has to worry about food safety. But not everyone knows how the oil used in their food is made or just how clean (or dirty) it is.
Recently, a netizen from China took photos of the production of "sewage oil" in their hometown and posted the photos online.
According to the witness, only when you see the process with your own eyes will you realize just how disgusting it is. The raw materials of this oil includes sewage and organic waste from a number of restaurants. Of course, the producers of this dirty cooking oil collaborate with the restaurant owners to make a profit.

Million tons of swill-cooked oil back on table
Read this before you eat at Chinese restaurants next time. Every year, two to three million tons of swill-cooked dirty oil, soaked with poisonous carcinogens have sneaked back to our dining tables through an underground muck-money network so rampant that it’s an open secret in the industry, the China Youth Daily reported Wednesday.
A deadly toxin found in swill-oil is aflatoxin, which is among the most carcinogenic substances ever known and is 100 times more poisonous than the forbidding white arsenic.
The stomach-turning news report quoted a veteran food professor as saying “about one in ten meals” at the country’s restaurants is cooked with such dirty oil, a calculation based on China’s annual oil consumption of 22.5 million tons…

Dirty Cooking Oil also Found in Vietnam
Although there are no statistics regarding the extent, recycling dirty cooking oil is also a problem in Vietnam. In January 2010, Vietnamese media reported that recycled oil was discovered being manufactured and sold in Vietnam.

This is a classic example of how a free market self-regulates. It is beautiful.
Initially, the entrepreneurs will make money and then as the poisonous nature of their product makes itself evident (by way of deaths, cancers and other diseases) the product will eventually fail and the entrepreneurs will move on to other ventures.
In this case, the entrepreneurs are providing a valuable population regulation service for their countries. If enough people consume the oil and die, this will reduce the demand for food, clothing, housing, motor vehicles and reduce carbon emissions (which is good for our planet).
This has made my day. I wish all pstogins were this good.

I agree this is capitalism at its best and this is why it must be vigilantly monitored by the state. competition in the market drives businesses to cut corners and cheat to make a profit. I now realize why I would get sick in the city more than in the countryside. This story is really scary. What is in your groundwater and foods? Nothing is really pure anymore. I guess I am resolved to not having kids. I am too scared about deformities. By the way, this is a great blog!
The problem with the State vigilantly monitoring the system is that the State is also a free-running system and consequently is prone to corruptions and hence distortions.
Leaving it all to the State will result in a corrupted system which may actually result in the bad practices becoming entrenched. You need also another system to monitor the monitoring system of the State. This is what most Western economies do, by setting up an anti-corruption watchdog with extreme powers. There is also the problem of the anti-corruption watchdog becoming corrupt as has happened, however a two level system works pretty well.
You are right that nothing is pure anymore. However having strong and enforced laws specifying minimum standards of food and water purity go a long way to keeping things safe. It will only work properly if the standards are strongly enforced, and that is the problem with 3rd world economies.
China is seen by many now to be rogue capitalist state with vestigal communist attributes. China will probably only fix itself through the mechanism of apocalypse . China will suffer a massive financial crisis within 2 years and this will fix things.

a classic reason why china will never be a ‘Super-power’, they’ll always be a ‘big-player’ because of their size and massive consumer base but they will never be ‘Great’ or ‘Super’ – it is not in the chinese psyche, they are a base-race and that’s all there is to it.
All decent and honest food outlets should have nothing to do with anything chinese other than using their cooking pots, nothing ‘food-based’ should ever be allowed into Europe or America from china – they are not to be trusted with anything. Filthy poison at best and dangerous filth at worst – typical chinese.
