In Vietnam, guns are strictly prohibited. Use of firearms are restricted to military and certain law enforcement personnel. Although there is still violence with other types of weapons, for example knives, gun violence is relatively rare.

This story was reported by Vietnamese media a few days ago with the headline “Thinking it was a toy, little boy points gun at his chest and pulls the trigger” (Tưởng đồ chơi, bé trai chĩa súng vào ngực bóp cò).

Mistaking a loaded gun for a toy, a 3-year has died after shooting himself in the chest.

Police from Chau Duc District, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province confirmed that the incident occurred at the residence of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thao on February 1st, 2011.

Nguyen Van Cuong, who is head of the local police department, was visiting his sister Thao on the day of the incident. When Cuong went to use the toilet he left his K-54 pistol on the table.

Thao’s 3-year old son had just come home and saw the pistol lying on the table. Not realizing that it was a real gun, the toddler pulled the trigger, firing a bullet through his chest. The little boy died instantly.

Another gun-related story from April, 2009:

Plastic toy gun blast kills 10-year-old boy

A 10-year-old boy died on April 18, 2009 and another was admitted to hospital in serious condition after a plastic toy gun exploded in the Dong Nai Commune in the southern province of Binh Phuoc.

Nguyen Thi Len picked up the gun, wrapped in a nylon bag, in her garden and gave it to her son, Vu Van Linh, to play with.

When the boy put a battery into the gun it blew up. He died on the way to hospital. Pham Dai Nghia, 4, who was standing nearby, was seriously injured.
