While most Vietnamese are rushing back to their hometowns to spend the Tet Lunar New Year with families and friends, one little boy has his eyes set on a different adventure.

Thiều Quang, is hoping to be one of the youngest from Asia to step foot in Antarctica.

Along with his father, the 9-year old will begin his journey by flying to Buenos Aires, Agentina. From there, they will make their way to the southern tip city Ushuia to catch a ride on the MS Fram operated by England’s Hurtigruten tour group.

According to the expedition schedule, Thieu Quang and his father will set foot in Antarctica on February 3rd and for two weeks will sail along the coast of the continent.

For the past few months, Thieu Quang has been researching as much as he can about the chilly southern destination. At the same time, he has been learning how to operate a camera so that he can take photos of the cold landscape for his friends back in “warm” Vietnam.

Thieu Quang is no stranger to the cold as he’s traveled with his family to places like Lijiang, China during the winter when the temperatures are subzero.

With a collection of model airplanes in his room, Thieu Quang dreams of becoming an engineer or designer building planes and ships. H

He also loves chocolate and has stuffed a small backpack full of the treat to bring along. He says that he will share the chocolate with his father, of course, and would share them with the penguins in Antarctica too.

Note: In 1997, a Vietnamese woman, Hoang Thi Minh, became the first Vietnamese to travel to Antarctica.
