Singapore media are reporting that China is mass producing fake rice

A number of Chinese companies have been involved over the years in various scandals involving fake or tainted goods. Perhaps the most dangerous of all involve food, including the now famous 2008 milk scandal in which Chinese-made milk was found to contain the toxin melamine. The end result was 290,000 victims who fell ill and 11 suspected cases of death.

Now there are reports from Singapore media that China is mass producing fake rice, which can be potentially very dangerous.

Original Korean article from: Weekly Hong Kong

Fake Plastic Rice from China

According to the Korean-language “Weekly Hong Kong” (which many Vietnam websites are referencing as well), Singapore media claim that fake rice is being distributed in the Chinese town of Taiyuan, in Shaanxi province. This “rice” is a mix of potatoes, sweet potatoes, and plastic. It is formed by mixing the potatoes and sweet potatoes into the shape of rice grains, then adding industrial synthetic resins. Since the rice does not behave like normal rice, it stays hard even after it has been cooked. Such synthetic resins can also be very harmful if consumed.

A Chinese Restaurant Association official said that eating three bowls of this fake rice would be like eating one plastic bag. Due to the seriousness of the matter, he added that there would be an investigation of factories alleged to be producing the rice. Meanwhile, the low cost of the fake rice is allowing wholesalers to make large profits.

Vietnam Increasingly Concerned over Food Safety

In Vietnam, there are have been various reports in the domestic media about tainted food, leading many to worry about the safety of the food supply. Here are some recent English articles from Vietnam:

Specifically involving food from China

  • February 19: “Plastic rice found in Ho Chi Minh City?”
  • January 21: “Contaminated food seized in HCMC”
  • January 18: “Smuggling diseased Chinese poultry into Vietnam increases as Tet approaches”
  • December 30: “Vietnam denies sale of fake eggs “
  • December 26: “Dangerous chemicals have been used in food for years”

Others

  • January 21: “Vietnam snake wines could induce biting headache”
  • Janury 20: “HCMC inspectors destroy unsafe eggs, seal borax-contaminated food”
  • January 14: “Vietnam finds carcinogen in spice samples”
  • January 10: “Nearly 470 workers hospitalized with food poisoning”
  • January 8: “Fake alcohol erodes rural people’s stomach”
  • January 4: “Food poisoning hits 700 in HCM City”
  • November 15: “Is unsafe food poisoning Vietnamese people?”

Here are comments and reactions from various Vietnam sources…

Nguyen Bich Van:

I’m so worried! Dumplings made from paper, milk with melamine, noodle soup with formaldehyde, shredded meat made from powder, and now "plastic rice"! What other poisons will we be made to eat?

a little baby :

What do they eat? What do the people who make this kind of rice eat? Do they ever think, what if their own children eat this rice? I don’t know what else to say.

Đàm Thị Xuân Uyên:

No way fake Chinese rice will enter Vietnam. Vietnam has exported rice for a number of years now, being one of the top 5 producers in the world. Even then, rice from Thailand, Cambodia, China, etc still get imported. These types of rice are not cheaper but are higher in quality, such as Jasmine rice from Cambodia which is 12,000 VND (about $0.60 USD) a kilogram. Is it because our rice is of a lower quality that we allow outside rice to flood into our country? Fake Chinese rice is terrifyingly dangerous: 3 bowls are equal to eating 1 plastic bag. It’s truly unimaginable! I believe if we are to answer the message for "Vietnamese people to buy Vietnamese products" then fake rice from China will have no way into Vietnam!

bạn đọc :

If you’re afraid to eat fake rice, going out into the field to grow it yourself is the best way. Then you won’t have to worry about anything.

Lê Văn Thuận :

Unbelievable, inhuman! Truly unimaginable.

Tuan:

Seems anything can be faked. Recently why have there been so many such cases? Fake chicken eggs, fake shredded squid. Truly unspeakable… but it’s mostly made from China.

Hieu:

Alas, rice is our main source of food, but now it too can be faked. I guess if you really want to know what’s "real" you have to make it yourself.

Việt:

There’s no more humanity. In my opinion, they should all be executed: from the manufacturers to the greedy distributors.

Thanh Minh:

It’s just sad for the poor. As living costs are becoming more difficult to bear, how can the poor to afford to eat good rice and not rice that’s mixed with plastic? And if they become sick, how would they pay for medical treatment? The poor become pooer. A suitable punishment of the severest kind if necessary (perhaps the death penalty to deter those guilty of killing people)

FBI_VY:

These people really have no morals. Fortunately Vietnam doesn’t have a rice shortage.

mrbitt:

Vietnamese people using Vietnamese products is the only way. Vietnam rice is number 1.

Glen, I hope you aren’t offended by my saying so but: The same could be said of the good ‘ole U.S.A. We have charming little companies like Monsanto and Tyson, which have both (along with many other American companies) been caught red-handing doing things that should rightfully be termed “crimes against humanity”. The fact that they are American companies does not however mean that the U.S.A. is intrinsically “evil”.. Just as the “evil” I.G. Farbin, which assisted in the murder of millions of people in WW2, being a German company, does not mean that Germany itself is “evil”.

        • China is becoming EVIL because about 30 years ago it decided to copy the Corporate Capitalist model of the United States, but without many effective government oversight agencies & regulations.
Russia has become more EVIL because when the Soviet system collapsed, it was replaced by men with KGB, business, & organized crime backgrounds who obtained all valuable state assets for a fraction of their value & used them to concentrate vast wealth, become Oligarchs & control the government.
The United States has become more EVIL because about 100 years ago (& more intensely 50 years ago) Corporate Capitalism used its wealth to slowly take control of all government oversight agencies, & much of the government itself..

In America, each industry controls the agency designed to oversee it. This process explains:
          1. the Mortgage Meltdown/Wall Street fraud,
          2. the unpunished & unresolved BP/Gulf oil spill,
          3. the invasion of Iraq,
          4. the Autism/vaccine crime & crisis,
          5. the current Wisconsin & other protests against State Governors who attack Union rights.

My advice to people in countries which were once focused on benefiting & serving the people, & those who as yet do not have much developed or foreign owed industry is the following:
          1. do not allow foreign or domestic Corporations to establish themselves in your country,
          2. do not allow the concentration of wealth & assets in the hands of the few, it produces men with arrogance & greed for more wealth & power,
          3. if you love your children, be very suspicious of all vaccinations & medications, especially from advanced countries & research them well before using,
          4. develop a body of laws & customs & courts which protect the rights of individuals,
          5. investigate the possibility of the existence of a loving Creator who will someday soon dramatically intervene in behalf of the good people of mankind & save the planet before we make it totally unlivable. It is mankind’s only hope for true peace & security.

Vietnamese rice is more valuable than Chinese rice.
If you’re Vietnam, you export large amounts and then use the profits to by cheap imported Chinese rice. It’s all about the money, not the available quantity.

I live in Japan and you see quite a bit of Chinese products on the shelves selling for 1/2 – 1/3 of the local product even though they have no shortage. I just always make sure to pay the extra and to try and avoid the poison.

  2. This is a good example showing that companies should not release innovative products until they are fully debugged. The Chinese rice manufacturer has a good business model, but perhaps through cost cutting/desire to get the market quickly they didn’t test it fully. It was foolish of them to ship that product until all the bugs were ironed out.

I think the Chinese company was too cheap to use a better quality plastic binder. Perhaps a long-chain polymerized compound would have been better. Long chain polymers will pass through the human digestive tract intact

  3. jenny says:

Gekkor you disgust me. Plastic is simply.. poisonous, whether or not you can digest it. There are alot of digestible poisons that will kill you over time. There is simply no reason at all rice should be fake. If people want to sell potatoes products cuz potoes are cheaper, let the people have potatoes. Im sure theyed rather eat potatoes than plastic covered fake rice. Or how about you eat nothing but fake plastic covered rice your whole life. It sickens me. I thought boil in a bag rice was an atrocious idea. China is a shamefull country, that cheats its workers out of their wages and pumps poisions into the world and their people and their sins are so bad they even have to hide it from the greedy corporations that employ them.

  5. lesblanca says:

looks like this is the result of ill advice given by the late chairman Dengxiaoping: “any cat that can catch a mice is a good cat” which literally means any Chinese who can make money (not matter what means) is a good Chinese. Now Deng had gone for good but what legacy left is more fake foods or goods will continue to flood the world over whether developed or underdeveloped endangering mankind. the Chinese authority had declared that the fake egg as acceptable ‘artificial egg’ not “FAKE”. will the rice be artificial rice not fake. the Chinese had already recycled edible oil from sewage widespread – you’ll find that most steamed vegetable from the almost all restaurants comes in grease laced rather than using cooking oil that can’t even be washed away with very hot water! the Chinese had already hid waste papers in minced meat and very good at camouflaging specific meat you order with some other substitutes. China is too big population wise to be controlled by a handful of guys. these few guys won’t be able to control hierarchy even if they wanted to.

  6. Mikkel says:

When communism goes out the windows capitalism walks in the front door and with it one of mans worst features, greed. When that starts to become the main drive force there are no end to what people will try to make money.

So we will be seeing alot more of this.

  8. Iris says:

Companies will always try to make money – driven by shareholders, etc. I don’t condone all these bad stuff being put in our food. The consumers will have to smarten up, spend a little less time in chasing money (which give instant gratification from material purchases) more time to cook proper food for your family, so you won’t be eating extra chemicals, preservatives, etc. found in convenient prepared foods .
I have already stopped buying foods, toys and any items which may contain lead, etc. from China, and I am Chinese, still proud of my heritage, but despise those no-concience money-making beings (notice I don’t use the word “human”)

  9. Laura says:

This just disgusts me to the fullest!! It doesn’t surprise me but definitely disgusts me. I mean i know we live in America and America is not always smart. This isn’t right at all in any kind of any way you can look at this. I mean seriously if any comes down to it is definitely a money making process. I can’t stand the way things are now a days. It’s like everywhere you ever walk or go you see all of this bad stuff everywhere. I mean my own kind of peers are all materialistic people and that just makes matters worst also, i mean when you’re buying cooperate crap it’s just going to became worse, plus a-lot of people don’t use there common sense anymore. For what they did they should be abolished.

I have never honestly been in an airport or on a air plane before but it will happen one way or another. Anyway the point i am trying to make is i plan to see all everything around world and not to be ignorant about other countrys and culture’s. You are one lucky human being.
& Food out of different worlds are more pure, fresh and probably way healthlyer for you to eat obviously.

Greed has engrossed the Chinese people to the extent that they are prepared to kill people just to get rich. I think this is the common mentality of Chinese people who do not fear God. Fake egg, fake pea, melamine and what again would crop out from China. China would not able to compete with the other superpower due to their greediness.

  19. The imminence of a ratings decision by S&P may explain why France has sought to deflect attention by lashing out against Britain, claiming the UK’s financial position is weaker than its own. Last week the Bank of France suggested the credit rating agencies train their fire on London, even though there seems no imminent danger of Britain losing its premier rating.
